Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has once again praised the efforts of the Worldcoin (WLD) team to enhance privacy measures on their platform. Buterin expressed his appreciation in a recent post on X, acknowledging Worldcoin’s proactive approach to addressing privacy concerns raised by critics. He emphasized that the team has demonstrated a commitment to minimizing data usage.

In Buterin’s own words, “In my opinion, they have actually done a commendable job of taking privacy critiques seriously and designing their system to be more data-minimal.”

Buterin made this positive statement following news that the CNPD, Portugal’s data regulator, has ordered Worldcoin to cease collecting biometric data for a period of 90 days. This represents the latest regulatory setback for Worldcoin’s iris-scanning project, which has faced privacy concerns in multiple countries.

In response to this development, X user Louis Anslow pointed out the irony of the situation by mentioning that he had his private parts scanned in Portugal in 2021 using a German device.

In light of this, Vitalik Buterin commented that the Worldcoin team has been doing an excellent job of managing criticisms aimed at their iris-scanning project and data collection practices. He also expressed admiration for the modern cryptography that the team is championing.

This recent endorsement reaffirms Buterin’s previous remarks, in which he suggested that Worldcoin’s dedication to privacy protection surpasses that of other centralized authentication solutions.

The Worldcoin Scanning Program allows individuals to register by undergoing iris scans, without the need for traditional identification details such as name, address, email, or phone number. Notably, Worldcoin incentivizes participants to undergo facial scans by offering a digital ID and free cryptocurrency, WLD. The Worldcoin website indicates that over 4.6 million people from 120 countries have already registered for this program.

While Worldcoin has received a warm reception from countries like Argentina, it has faced regulatory concerns from others like Kenya. Portugal is the latest country to join the list of nations scrutinizing the Worldcoin iris-scanning project.

Earlier this week, Portugal’s data regulator expressed concerns about the potential threat to citizens’ data protection rights and cited a high risk that requires immediate intervention to prevent serious harm. The regulator also revealed that over 300,000 individuals in Portugal have already submitted their biometric data to Worldcoin.
